Selections from the Mississippi Cookbook Collection

The Mississippi Community Cookbook Project is a collection of cookbooks from communities across the state of Mississippi housed in the McCain Library and Archives at Southern Miss. The cookbooks were created by various community organizations, such as churches and parent-teacher associations, and sometimes supported by advertisements from local businesses. The cookbooks showcased local, family recipes as well as adaptations of recipes clipped from newspapers and magazines. But whether the recipes were original or not, these cookbooks offer a glimpse into the communities that produced them. The project is co-directed by Jennifer Brannock, Professor and Curator of Rare Books and Mississippiana in McCain Library and Archives, and Andrew Haley, Associate Professor in the Department of History of The University of Southern Mississippi.
